M5 junctions 4a to 6 smart motorway

Making the M5 junctions 4a to 6 an 'All Lane Running' smart motorway.

Region:  West Midlands
Start date:  January 2016
Cost:  TBC
Status:  COMPLETED
Type:  Major Scheme
End date:  Spring 2017
Programme:

Progress report

We opened the second and final phase of the smart motorway between junctions 5 (Droitwich Spa) and 6 (Worcester) to traffic on 26 May completing the smart motorway scheme.

The M5 between junctions 4a (Bromsgrove) and 6 (Worcester) now has an extra lane in both directions to provide more capacity, new overhead signs and signals to give drivers more information and variable speed limits to smooth traffic flow.

The first phase of the scheme between Bromsgrove and Droitwich Spa opened in April.

Why we need this scheme

This is a very busy section of motorway carrying traffic into Birmingham and is frequently congested.

To add extra capacity we will make the M5 between junctions 4a (Bromsgrove) and 6 (Worcester) a smart motorway with 'All Lane Running'.

This means there will be no hard shoulder. Instead all 4 lanes will be open for traffic to use. If you need to stop in an emergency you will be able to use one of the regularly spaced emergency refuge areas.

Aims

The smart motorways technology will:

  • reduce congestion and smooth the flow of traffic
  • improve journey time reliability
  • support economic development in the region

It will also improve access to the region’s business hubs including:

  • Birmingham International Airport
  • National Exhibition Centre
  • major freight depots and business centres

Environment impact

We've completed an environmental assessment report that covers a range of topics including noise, air quality, ecology, cultural heritage, materials used and visual impacts on the landscape.

The report’s overall conclusion is that there will not be a significant environmental impact for this scheme.

Ecology

We've completed surveys for protected species, and great-crested newts were identified within ponds adjacent to the scheme. We're working to ensure their habitat and lifecycle remains protected during construction.

Noise

We're resurfacing the carriageway with low-noise surfacing. This work will be completed as part of the construction programme for the scheme. Low noise surfacing will address 8 areas along the route that are Noise Important Areas.
