M49 Avonmouth junction

Construction of a new junction on the M49 in the Avonmouth region.

Region:  South West
Start date:  11 December 2017
Cost:  £25 million - £50 million
Status:  CURRENT
Type:  Major Scheme
End date:  December 2019
Programme:

Progress report

We’ve almost completed ground improvement works on the eastern side of M49. This will ensure the ground is strong enough to support the embankment and new bridge.

We’ve recently commenced ground improvement works on the western side of the M49 which follows the same process as on the eastern side.

We’ve started drainage works at the Amazon pond. We’re digging a new rhine (drainage ditch) so we can divert the current one. We’re also excavating a new major rhine in the south western area of site.

What's next?

We’ve just started the new bridge foundations on the eastern side of the M49. We’ll be using a corkscrew method of piling to drill into the ground; concrete will then be poured to create the foundations.

Why we need this scheme

We've committed, along with Bristol City Council and South Gloucestershire Council, to unlocking the economic potential of the Avonmouth Severnside Enterprise Area. It's an important regional employment site and the largest brownfield site in Western Europe. The site is expected to attract new economic activity and associated employment in diverse sectors including energy generation, waste management, manufacturing, warehousing and distribution.

As the port of Avonmouth and the Avonmouth Severnside Enterprise Area to the west of Bristol currently have no direct access to the M49, it has hindered proposals to support economic growth in the area. The M49 junction will open up these areas, ease congestion and contribute to the economic growth of the region.

Aims

The aims of this scheme are to:

  • support economic growth
  • relieve traffic on local roads around the Avonmouth Severnside Enterprise Area
  • improve access to the regional highways network
  • improve road safety by relieving pressure on the local road network

The scheme in detail

The new junction is located to the south of the Western Approach Distribution Park and west of the village of Easter Compton.

The design features a two-bridge junction. It uses the existing bridge at Farm Lane with a second bridge built immediately next to it. The two bridges are incorporated into a single roundabout that spans the motorway. New access and exit slip roads will be built on both sides of the motorway junction so that it connects fully with both northbound and southbound traffic.

The new bridge that we're building over the M49 will include a dedicated lane for walkers, cyclists and other users.

Two stubs will be left on the new roundabout when the scheme is complete. These will allow the junction to be connected to the local road network to support future development in this area.

Site compound location

Our main site compound is located off Farm Lane, on the east side of the M49 next to the southbound carriageway. Most of our vehicles will access the compound directly from the M49. A small number of cars and light vehicles will access the site compound via the industrial estate on the west side of the M49 and over the existing Farm Lane bridge. None of our construction traffic will use the B4055 through Easter Compton.
