A66 East Layton to West Layton

We’re resurfacing the A66 west of Scotch Corner between East Layton and West Layton in County Durham including some patches where we need to dig deeper into the carriageway before resurfacing. We’ll also be replacing road studs with new solar versions and refreshing the white lining.

Region:  North East
Start date:  25 January 2020
Cost:  TBC
Status:  CURRENT
Type:  Improvement Scheme
End date:  February 2020
Programme:

Progress report

Over the first two weekend closures we were able to complete a significant amount of deep reconstruction of the carriageway.

To do this we had to lay the tarmac in thick layers that needed the full weekend to cool enough to allow traffic to drive on it without damaging the newly laid surface.

We also removed some hedging and replaced it with fencing, improving visibility for drivers at New Lane junction.

Storms Ciara and now Dennis have meant we have had to postpone two weekends’ worth of closures. We took these decisions because we put safety above everything else and recognised that as well as exposing our workers to risk, the diversion routes would be susceptible to flooding potentially endangering the local community.

What's next?

Unfortunately, we have had to cancel the planned closure for this weekend (14-17 February). The forecasted storm Dennis mean it would not be safe to go ahead.

The final two weekends we will be continuing deep resurfacing at New Lane and Mainsgill and will be removing trees that limit visibility at Moor Lane.

Road closures will be in place as follows:

  • Weekend three: A66 closed between Scotch Corner and Rokeby from 9pm Friday 21 February until 6am Monday 24 February
  • Weekend four: A66 closed between Scotch Corner and Rokeby from 9pm Friday 28 February until 6am Monday 2 March

Please note that road closures can be subject to change. Please check the live roadworks feed for the most up to date information.

Why we need this scheme

The road surface has deteriorated and we need to undertake some deep patch works. The layout of the road means that we cannot do this safely without completely closing the road.

Whilst work takes place:

  • the westbound A66 will be closed at Scotch Corner and the eastbound A66 will be closed at Rokeby
  • local traffic will be diverted around full carriageway closures at the junctions with Dick Scot Lane and Warreners Lane

HGVs will be diverted eastbound on A66 from Bowes to Rokeby, north via Westwick Road and then via:

  • A688 and A68, avoiding the weak bridge at Barnard Castle, and rejoining the A1 at junction 58
  • Traffic under the weight restriction of 7.5 tonnes will be diverted through Barnard
