Progress report

Plans for the A47 North Tuddenham to Easton dualling scheme are progressing following the Preferred Route Announcement after consultation with the public in August 2017.

An amended version of Option 2, with the route amended to address some of the key concerns raised, was chosen for the new dual carriageway between North Tuddenham and Easton.

Why we need this scheme

The North Tuddenham to Easton section of the A47 connects key economic growth areas of Norwich.

The road between North Tuddenham and Easton is not adequate to cope with the high volume of traffic. There is a clear and demonstrable need to increase capacity along the route. The safety of adjoining routes also increases the need for improvements to be made. There are limited opportunities to overtake slower moving vehicles while traveling on this single carriageway. This results in increased and unreliable journey times.

Economic growth in the area may be hindered due to the capacity limitations of the current carriageway. Investment to increase capacity will facilitate local aspirations for increased land use and development and will contribute to local economic growth.

Aims

The aims and objectives of the proposed North Tuddenham to Easton dualling scheme are to:

  • contribute to sustainable economic growth by supporting employment and residential development opportunities
  • reduce congestion-related delay, improve journey time reliability and increase the overall capacity of the A47
  • improve road safety for all road users by being designed to modern highway standards appropriate for a major A road
  • increase the resilience of the road in coping with incidents such as collisions, breakdowns, maintenance and extreme weather
  • enable more reliable journey times and provide capacity for future traffic growth

The scheme in detail

The scheme proposes a new dual carriageway to the south and north of the existing road. We're also proposing two new junctions. The first junction will be a roundabout at Berry’s Lane and Wood Lane, and the second junction will be a roundabout located at Blind Lane and Taverham Road. Because of these additions to the side roads, the Easton roundabout will be removed. These improvements will better connect side roads into the new dual carriageway.
