A160/A180 Port of Immingham

Improving the A160 between the junction with the A180 at Brocklesby interchange and access to the Port of Immingham.

Region:  North East
Start date:  Spring 2015
Cost:  £96.6 million
Status:  COMPLETED
Type:  Major Scheme
End date:  Spring 2017
Programme:

Progress report

The new gyratory at Rosper Road is now fully open to traffic. The original single carriageway section of the A160 between Brocklesby junction and Habrough roundabout is now open for use as a dual carriageway and the slip roads at Brocklesby junction are also open.

The new Town Street bridge over the A160 is now open at South Killingholme improving access for residents on both sides of the village.

We currently have off-peak lane closures in place midweek with some weekend closures to avoid substantial impact on traffic movement. Check our roadworks calendar for current roadworks.

What next?

The contractors are continuing to finish the landscaping works and outstanding defects as well as reinstating the land back to previous owners.

Why we need this scheme

This is an important strategic route, yet currently experiences congestion – particularly along the single carriageway section – due to the very high proportion of heavy goods vehicles.

The scheme in detail

The length of the project is approximately 5km and the main aspects include:

  • upgrading Brocklesby interchange to an oval two bridge roundabout layout, including a dedicated left turn lane for vehicles travelling from the eastbound A180 to the A160
  • upgrading the single carriageway section of the A160 to dual carriageway standard
  • relocating Habrough roundabout to the west of its current position, with new link roads provided from the A160 to Ulceby Road, Top Road and Habrough Road
  • closing the central reserve gap at the junction with Town Street and partially closing the gap at the entrance to the oil refinery
  • provision of a new road bridge at Town Street to provide vehicle and pedestrian access between the two parts of South Killingholme
  • provision of a new gyratory carriageway system between Manby Road roundabout, Rosper Road junction and the Port of Immingham, requiring the construction of a new link road and bridge beneath the railway
  • localised diversion of third-party gas pipelines that cross beneath the existing A160

Aims

We aim to stimulate growth and unlock economic benefits in the area by:

  • reducing traffic congestion
  • improving journey time reliability
  • meeting the demands of the predicted growth in traffic resulting from existing and future developments nearby
  • improving safety for road users and the local community

Environmental impact

Staff on the A160 Port of Immingham improvement scheme are promoting a ‘Bees Needs’ approach to bumblebee conservation. The A160 team invited Gill Perkins, the Conservation Manager for the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, to speak and conduct a bumblebee walk through the project’s specially constructed water vole habitat.

Gill was delighted with what she found describing the water vole habitat as a “bumblebee heaven”, adding, “I have never seen so many bumblebees together in one place.”

Having registered with the Conservation Trust, the A160 team are now looking to encourage local schools and landowners to register with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust to build and maintain bumblebee friendly habitats.
