A47 corridor improvement programme

In 2014 the UK Government established the Road Investment Strategy. As part of this the East of England was identified as an area in need of investment. 17 major road schemes were identified as requiring investment including 6 schemes along the A47.

It is recognised that the A47 has a number of congestion hotspots around Norwich, Peterborough and Great Yarmouth. These result in delays and concerns regarding safety for all road users. There are also developments resulting in significant growth predicted along the A47 through Norfolk and these are the areas which our proposed improvements will help to support for the local communities affected.

The schemes involved are shown below. Each scheme undertook a consultation in 2017, and you can find out more about the results of these consultations by visiting the individual scheme pages:

Public consultations

We will hold three consultations before we propose a final design for the scheme. These will be:

  • TBC - A47 Wansford to Sutton
  • 12 June to 6 August 2018 - A47 Thickthorn Junction
  • 12 September to 7 November 2018 - Blofield to North Burlingham

Schedule of construction

Construction will be sequenced to manage disruption along the route for our customers. Construction will start as follows:

  • A47/A11 Thickthorn ( 3-6 month delay/ start of works 2020-21)
  • A47 and A12 junction enhancement : start of works 2018-19
