The A27 runs east west between Eastbourne and Portsmouth

The A27 is the only east-west trunk road south of the M25. Running between Portsmouth and Pevensey, it forms a key route linking the coastal hubs of Chichester, Worthing, Brighton and Hove, Eastbourne and Hastings.

Serving a population of more than 750,000 people, the A27 is used by both locals and those travelling further, whether that be for work or leisure. It also provides important connections to the A259, A21, A23/M23, A3 and M27.

This busy route regularly suffers from congestion and incidents, which causes delays to journeys. There's also only a few places walkers, cyclists and horse-riders to safely cross. 

That’s why we’re looking into a number of improvements along the A27 to make the road safer and less congested.

A27 maintenance work

Here's the latest information about maintenance work taking place on the A27:

Grove Lodge to Lancing resurfacing - February to May 2023

We’re resurfacing and repairing between Sompting and Lancing. This will help keep the road safe and improve journeys, it also means there'll be fewer unplanned closures.

Our work will be carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am, Monday to Friday only, when there is less traffic on the road, from Monday 6 February, until end of May 2023.

To keep everyone safe and allow us to complete as much work as possible, the road will be closed in phases between Grove Lodge and Lancing Manor roundabouts.

We're building a new roundabout on the A27 east of Lancing to give access to the New Monks Farm development and provide better links to Brighton City Airport.

Work is expected to last until Autumn 2023 and will be carried out in stages to keep traffic moving and disruption to a minimum.

A27 Arundel bypass

As the main road serving the south coast, the A27 is a crucial route through the south east. However, as it passes through Arundel it operates well over capacity and causes disruption and severe congestion. We're developing options for how the route could be improved.

A27 East of Lewes

The A27 to the east of Lewes suffered from congestion due to the narrow carriageway and low capacity at junctions. There were limited overtaking opportunities and traffic would often queue behind cyclists and slow moving vehicles. We've made several improvements for road users, pedestrians, cyclists and horse-riders.

A27 Worthing and Lancing improvements

Congestion on this stretch of the A27 causes accidents, delays to journey times and pollution. There is a significant amount of development planned in the area in the future and, without improvements, traffic congestion, road accidents and pollution are likely to increase. We are developing some short-term proposals to improve this section of the A27.

A27 Chichester bypass (Road Investment Strategy 3 pipeline development scheme)

The A27 Chichester bypass scheme is being developed to improve safety for all road users, including cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders. Our proposals will also seek to reduce congestion and create better connectivity. The project is one of 32 pipeline schemes being considered for possible inclusion in the third Road Investment Strategy (RIS3).
