M62 junctions 27 and 28 improvement scheme
We’ve carried out improvements to junctions 27 and 28 of the M62 to increase safety and reduce congestion. We’re now carrying out further improvements to ease traffic flows at junction 28.
Project information
We’re upgrading the traffic signal operating system around the roundabout. This will further enhance the improvements that we previously carried out at junction 28 which provided an additional lane on the westbound exit slip road and improve traffic flows and reduce congestion. As part of the improvements we also provided additional lanes to the exit slip roads westbound at junction 27 (M62 and M621 exit slip roads) as well as widening of the southern roundabout at junction 27. The roundabout was also resurfaced and new road signs and markings installed as well as upgrading the traffic signals and technology in place.
The work to upgrade the existing traffic signal operating system will further enhance the widening work at the junction by improving safety and reducing congestion. Prior to our improvements at junctions 27 and 28 drivers experienced significant delays, particularly during peak hours, which resulted in unreliable journey times.
The current signals allocate a fixed amount of time for drivers to go through them which can result in delays when traffic is quiet. This new system will pick up queue lengths and alter the lights accordingly, drastically reducing delays.
