Second full weekend closure to go ahead this weekend

Last weekend, the first of two full weekend closures went ahead as planned. We managed to carry out the more extensive repairs – despite the bad weather.

From 9pm on Friday 19 March, the second full weekend closure will start, to finish the last of the extensive repairs. This will be removed by 5am on Monday 22 March 2021.

The repairs are subject to weather conditions, and we’ve booked in a third weekend of closures as a precaution should either of the first two weekend closures get cancelled. This has been provisionally booked in from 9pm Friday 26 March to 5am Monday 29 March 2021.

Concrete carriageway repairs and full weekend closures

We'll begin our work to repair the carriageway from 10 March 2021. We’ll carry out most of the repairs at night, when traffic flows are at their lowest. Full overnight carriageway closures are required to carry out this work safely. However, some of the repairs needed to restore some sections of carriageway are too large and deep to complete under a short space of time.

As a result, we plan to have two full weekend closures in place on the M60 clockwise between junctions 1 and 2 to carry out repairs to the larger sections of carriageway. The weekend closures are planned:

    • from 9pm Friday 12 March to 5am Monday 15 March 2021
    • from 9pm Friday 19 March to 5am Monday 22 March 2021

The repairs are subject to weather conditions, and we’ve booked in a third weekend of closures as a precaution should either of the first two weekend closures get cancelled. This has been provisionally booked in from 9pm Friday 26 March to 5am Monday 29 March 2021.

Overview

Over the years, we’ve carried out frequent carriageway repairs on the M60 between junctions 1 and 2. Despite this, the carriageway has continued to fail with pot holes and defects regularly forming, so last year we carried out some investigation work. This helped us to understand why the carriageway was failing, the extent of the damaged underneath and what repairs are needed to resolve the problem. We now know that the concrete underneath the carriageway is significantly damaged. Unless the concrete is repaired, the carriageway will continue to break away.

These repairs were originally planned to take place this summer. However, with traffic numbers being much lower than normal during lockdown, we want to take advantage of this to minimise disruption to our customers.

The repairs are essential to ensure we keep the network safe and operational, as well as improving journeys for our customers.

Once the scheme is complete, future carriageway repairs will be significantly reduced and therefore reduce disruption to motorists.

New quieter noise surface will also be used, reducing motorway noise to nearby properties.
