The proposed Lower Thames Crossing is to feature in a Channel Five programme this week. The Thames with Tony Robinson airs on Wednesday 27 January at 9pm.

In the series, Tony meets and immerses himself in the lives of those who work along the river and explores how the Thames has shaped the history and culture of Britain.

In this episode Tony meets Emma Toms, one of the new generation of engineers and explores how our plans to connect Kent and Essex will unlock the potential of the Thames Estuary.

Emma reveals what we have learned about the ground below our feet, and how this is shaping our plans for the longest road tunnels in the UK, 53 metres below the surface of the Thames.

We’re carrying out one of the most comprehensive programmes of ground investigations and surveys ever seen in the UK. You can learn more about our plans to design and build the Lower Thames Crossing here.

The Lower Thames Crossing will improve journeys by almost doubling road capacity across the Thames east of London with 14.3 miles of new road featuring two 2.6 mile-long tunnels.

The Thames with Tony Robinson aired on Wednesday 27 January on Channel Five.
