    Forthcoming road closures

    July / August road closures

We need to have overnight road closures from 8pm – 6am on A47 between Thickthorn Interchange to Postwick eastbound on 2 July, and then westbound on 3 July to install a contraflow.

    • Diversions: Eastbound traffic to leave the A47 at Thickthorn interchange and travel along the A11 to join Boundary Road clockwise (part of the inner ring round) and continue along Mile Cross Lane/ A1042. Traffic will turn onto the Wroxham Road/A1151 and then join the A1270 to travel eastbound to re-join the A47 at Postwick. Westbound traffic will follow the same diversion in reverse.

From Sunday 4 July to Tuesday 13 July (9 days and nights) a two-way contraflow system will then be in place day and night (including weekends) on the A47 between Postwick and Ipswich Road (A140 junction). During these roadworks, the A146 westbound exit and entry slip roads will be closed. Advanced warning signs and a signed diversion route will be in place.

From Tuesday 13 July to Sunday 18 July (6 nights) there will be overnight closures from 8pm to 6am on A47 between Thickthorn Interchange and Postwick, with a westbound closure on 13 July only and then eastbound closures from 14 July to 18 July to remove the contraflow barriers.

Then from Monday 19 July to Wednesday 18 August there will be westbound overnight closures from 8pm to 6am on the A47 between Cucumber Lane Roundabout and Trowse Newton, including weekends (5 weeks).

    • Diversion: Westbound traffic will be diverted via the A47 to Beccles, Gt Yarmouth. Traffic will then follow the A143 to Gillingham where they will then turn right onto the A146. Traffic will follow the A146 until they reach Trowse Newton where they will join the A47.

Project information

Overview

We are carrying out essential resurfacing between the Postwick junction and Ipswich Road junction on both the westbound and eastbound carriageways of the A47.

Alongside this, we’ll be doing additional maintenance and repairs to safety barriers, replacing road markings and reflective studs (cat’s eyes), new road signs and updating technology.

We will split the work into phases, which will take four months to complete.

Our work will increase the life expectancy of the road surface and make journeys safer for motorists.

By doing other road maintenance at the same time, we will reduce the number of times we need to have roadworks.
This will reduce the amount of disruption to local businesses and communities.
