    Delivery Plan update

We recently published our delivery plan update that confirms we have taken the difficult decision, with the agreement of the Department for Transport, not to progress this scheme further as a standalone project. We have been assessing its feasibility alongside our proposed, larger, A5 Hinckley to Tamworth scheme, which also aims to improve journeys as well as safety and we think it makes sense to consider within the context of the larger scheme.

In 2015 we delivered two improvement schemes at junctions at either end of the proposed Dodwells to Longshoot widening scheme. The benefits provided by these improvements mean that the additional benefit of dualling that section of the A5 is reduced. Cost implications associated with flood risk mitigation and existing utility infrastructure have further reduced the benefits and value for money of this scheme.

    Technical surveys

During the next 6 to 12 months we will be undertaking a number of technical surveys. These surveys will assist with commencing the proposed design.

Project information

Overview

We are widening the current section of single carriageway between Dodwells roundabout and the Longshoot junction into a dual carriageway. We are also building a shared foot/cycleway to the south side of the carriageway. We plan to start work in 2020/21 subject to Land Purchase, however we’ll start design work this year to determine an appropriate option for the scheme.

The aims of the scheme are to:

  • relieve congestion and improve traffic flow
  • improve safety for all road users
