Our 2019-20 report is based on a snapshot of data for 31 March 2019; our mean gender pay gap is 5.9% and our median gender pay gap was 2.2%, substantially lower than the current UK pay gap of 16%.

Over the past year, the Strategic Design Panel has applied its advisory powers to provide advice on standards and processes, and embedding Highways England’s design vision and principles. It has also considered and made recommendations on the importance of green infrastructure and quality in construction, and overseen the design review of complex and sensitive schemes.

This report looks at the five key outcomes described in the Biodiversity Plan, and presents our key actions and achievements, for the 2018-19 financial year, under each outcome heading.

To support our vision for the network, we have established a set of principles for good road design which follow the themes of people, places and processes. These will encourage better design and provide the basis for road schemes to be objectively reviewed.

The panel was set up to support the development of a culture where good design is at the heart of everything within Highways England and the wider road sector. This coincides with Highways England delivering the biggest programme of Government investment in a generation.
