We will start work on this scheme on 31 January 2017. Our contractors, Interserve, will be carrying out the work on our behalf.
We’ll be widening some of the entry and exit slip roads to the roundabout at junction 45 of the M1 and adding an extra lane to the roundabout itself increasing it from 2 to 3 lanes. This will improve capacity at the junction which is a major route in and out of Leeds city centre.
We’ll need to close the road so we can carry out important bridge works, gantry installation and road surfacing.
Use our roadworks tool to check for forthcoming closures.
|Work starts||31 January 2017|
|Work ends||December 2017|
Cyclists, horse riders, pedestrians
During the works we will extend the underpass under the M1 to Temple Newsam. We will work to make sure this underpass stays open at all times. When works are taking place on the underpass, one of our contractor Interserve’s staff will make sure you are escorted through safely.
On completion of the scheme we will have created a route for pedestrians and cyclists to cross between Pontefract Lane to the north and south of the junction, using Toucan pedestrian and cycle crossings.
Why we need the scheme
The M1 is an important north-south link. Junction 45 serves east Leeds and currently suffers from congestion, particularly at peak times. If we don’t act now, this situation will get worse.
The extra capacity will also be needed to support developments planned in this area, particularly along the East Leeds Link Road, which is part of the Aire Valley Enterprise Zone.
With this scheme, we aim to:
- reduce existing delays
- open up new areas for development
- encourage economic growth and job creation
