Progress report

From 13 March to 21 April, we held a public consultation to gain your feedback on our plans to improve journeys on the A47. Information was available via our website, at public libraries and events held across the area. Having reviewed your feedback following the consultation, and completed a number of other assessments, we are proceeding with our six chosen route options that will ensure quick and reliable journeys along the A47. You can find out more about the preferred routes for the 6 improvements along the route and the benefits they will bring. Click on the links below to view a copy of our preferred route announcement leaflet.

Construction will be sequenced to manage disruption along the route for our customers. Construction will start as follows:

  • A47/A11 Thickthorn ( 3-6 month delay/ start of works 2020-21)
  • A47 and A12 junction enhancement : start of works 2018-19

What next?

We are contacting everyone whose land or property we believe may be directly affected by our proposals. Details of dates and locations for you to come and meet us will be publicised and put on this website as soon as they are confirmed. In the meantime, you can contact us directly with your thoughts and suggestions to us at our Highways England Contact Centre 0300 123 5000 or by emailing info@highwaysengland.co.uk.

Why we need this scheme

It is recognised that the A47 has a number of congestion hotspots around Norwich, Peterborough and Great Yarmouth. These result in delays and concerns regarding safety for all road users. There are also developments resulting in significant growth predicted along the A47 through Norfolk and these are the areas which our proposed improvements will help to support for the local communities affected.

The scheme in detail

We are proposing 6 locations along the route for improvements. These are: You can view a route map outlining the six schemes. These proposals are part of the Roads Investment Strategy announced in 2014.

This scheme improvements will:
  • improve accessibility to and around the region, reducing congestion and delays so encouraging more reliable journey times
  • improve safety performance for all road users – drivers, public transport users, cyclists, horse riders and pedestrians - contributing to a 40% reduction target in accidents across Highways England’s roads over the implemented schemes’ first five years
  • provide alternative access to local roads
  • improve the environmental impact of traffic along the A47 route, particularly for the communities in the six scheme areas
  • support economic growth in the Peterborough, Norwich and Great Yarmouth areas, improving overall road capacity
