Upgrading the traffic signal operating system

Work to improve safety and reduce congestion at junctions 27 and 28 (Gildersome and Tingley) as part of our Minor Safety Improvements Programme has now been completed.

We’re now carrying out further improvements at Tingley roundabout after securing additional funding to upgrade the existing traffic signal operating system. This work will enhance the recent widening work that was funded by us and carried out by Leeds City Council.

We’ll be working in partnership with Leeds City Council who will be carrying out the work which is due to start on Monday 23 March. It should be completed in around 16 weeks which includes four weeks for the traffic signal testing and validation work.

Project information

Overview

We’re upgrading the traffic signal operating system around the roundabout. This will further enhance the improvements that we previously carried out at junction 28 which provided an additional lane on the westbound exit slip road and improve traffic flows and reduce congestion. As part of the improvements we also provided additional lanes to the exit slip roads westbound at junction 27 (M62 and M621 exit slip roads) as well as widening of the southern roundabout at junction 27. The roundabout was also resurfaced and new road signs and markings installed as well as upgrading the traffic signals and technology in place.

The work to upgrade the existing traffic signal operating system will further enhance the widening work at the junction by improving safety and reducing congestion. Prior to our improvements at junctions 27 and 28 drivers experienced significant delays, particularly during peak hours, which resulted in unreliable journey times.

The current signals allocate a fixed amount of time for drivers to go through them which can result in delays when traffic is quiet. This new system will pick up queue lengths and alter the lights accordingly, drastically reducing delays.
