    Work completes

Lofthouse completed back in August and we’d just like to thank everyone for their patience while we carried out this work.

We also thought it might be nice to provide you with an overview of the work that took place.

We’d had 23 unplanned interventions at the junction in the last two years and we wanted to take the opportunity to carry out improvements especially while traffic flows were low due to lockdown.

While on site we’ve carried out the following:

    • removal of the joints, waterproofing, road surface, kerblines and concrete.
    • cleaning and scraping of the bridge decks.
    • removed concrete from the ends of the decks using hydro-demolition.
    • installed water pumps, scaffolding and hydro demolition tents.
    • cleaned studs and nuts and welded steel plates to the bridge deck beams.
    • deck surveys and inspections.
    • fixed the reinforcement and re-cast the deck ends, replaced the waterproofing.
    • resurfacing, white lines and road studs.
    • installed new kerblines, concrete infill and new bridge joints.
    • replaced reflective bollards.
    • cut back vegetation on the roundabout.

We had 19 contractors working on the scheme with five of them on site at one time.

Here’s some interesting stats for you:

    • 144 road studs
    • 18.853 tonnes of steel
    • 5,518 square metres of waterproofing has been laid
    • 36,384 square metres of resurfacing
    • 896 metres of concrete kerbing
    • 1.754kms of white line
    • 96 cubic metres of concrete removed by high pressure water jetting

    Interchange closures

We’ll need to completely close the interchange for the duration of the scheme so we can complete the work in the shortest time possible minimising disruption to regular road users.

The closure will mean that anyone wishing to travel in the following directions will need to follow a signposted diversion route:

    • M1 northbound to M62 eastbound
    • M62 eastbound to M1 southbound
    • M62 westbound to M1 northbound

The diversions will require vehicles to travel to the next junction and back to the junction to use the free-flowing link road. These don’t require you to use the roundabout itself and will all remain open throughout the duration of the work.

    View diversion map.

This programme has been developed to minimise disruption and optimise resource providing long-term stability, greater lifespan and reducing the need for delays and lane closures for repairs in the future.

    Repair work

We’re carrying out a series of repairs to the structure. This includes replacing the 20 bridge joints, five on each of the four bridges. These help the bridge to move in a controlled way when traffic passes over it and during severe weather.

We'll also be waterproofing the bridges to protect the structure and carrying out resurfacing and replacing the white lining and road studs to provide drivers with a smoother and safer journey.

This picture shows the work that will be carried out at each bridge.

Project information

Overview

The structure opened in December 1970 and carries 45,000 vehicles per day, it’s a crucial intersection of connecting east, west, south and north as well as crucial support for our economy.

We’re carrying out a series of repairs to the concrete bridge deck ends, waterproofing course, expansion joints and surfacing to create a safe, reliable journey for road users.

This programme has been developed to minimise disruption and optimise resource providing long-term stability, greater lifespan and reducing the need for less delays and lane closures for repairs in the future.

When complete the scheme will create a safer, more reliable and smoother journey for road users.
