    Road investment strategy 2020-2025

The government published its Road Investment Strategy 2 in March 2020, covering the period 2020-2025. In addition to projects that government is asking Highways England to build during this period, it has also asked us to develop plans for more than 30 projects, including the A1 Doncaster to Darrington. These projects may be considered by government for delivery in future Road Investment Strategies.

    Survey work completed

We've completed a range of surveys and assessment work to give us information about traffic volumes and the local environment. This information will help us explore different design options that would meet our aims for the project.

We've started discussions with local authorities and technical stakeholders so we can take their views into account.

Project information

In our 2020-25 Delivery Plan we set out our plans to develop a steady and flexible pipeline of over 30 schemes for consideration in the third road period and beyond. This includes the A1 Doncaster to Darrington.

This pipeline will ensure we are ready to upgrade our roads in 2025 and beyond.

Over the second road period, we will prioritise schemes for development, considering value for money, affordability and our strategic objectives. We will only progress schemes to delivery if they provide value for money.

There is no commitment from government to construct this scheme. Decisions about what will be constructed from 2025 onwards will be made by the government as part of its RIS planning process.

Currently the route is congested, especially on weekday mornings and evenings, and has a number of local road accesses between Redhouse and Darrington. The number of accidents recorded on this route is higher than the national average.

The scheme will look to relieve congestion, improve journey time variability, support regeneration and the regional economy. It will also complement other improvements to the strategic road network in the region, and improve, as far as possible, environment and to ensure that impacts on people, fauna, flora and other natural assets adjacent to proposals are minimised.
