M5 junction 10 improvements (Gloucestershire County Council)
With Highways England’s support, Gloucestershire County Council is developing a package of improvements to the west of Cheltenham, including a proposed upgrade of M5 junction 10.
Project information
Junction 10 is currently a limited movement junction providing access to the northbound M5, and from the southbound M5. The absence of slip roads for traffic wishing to leave the northbound M5 or join the southbound M5 in this location, puts increasing pressure on already congested local roads close to junction 10, and means more traffic has to use junction 11. Gloucestershire County Council is proposing to change the layout of junction 10, to provide an all-movements junction. This will mean traffic can join or leave the motorway in all directions. The work, which is being funded by the Housing Infrastructure Fund and developed as part of a package of improvements by Gloucestershire County Council, is expected to provide a range of environmental, economic and social benefits. It will help to facilitate the delivery of housing and economic development sites in the area. The new layout will also improve access to and from the motorway for emergency service operations. As well as an upgrade to junction 10, Gloucestershire County Council’s scheme also includes:

The key benefits resulting from the proposed scheme will be:
- unlocking of proposed housing and employment sites in west Cheltenham
- a reduction in congestion and the associated noise and air quality on local roads and the M5
- increased accessibility for residents, M5 users and the emergency services
- a reduction in emissions from fewer incidences of idling/stop-start engines
- wider economic impacts
