M56 maintenance schemes
The M56 is a key route between Cheshire and Greater Manchester.
We’re investing approximately £12 million over the next 12 months, maintaining journeys and safety for the thousands of drivers who use the M56 every day.
Between junctions 6 and 16 of the M56, we’ll be carrying out a number of maintenance schemes. They are essential in maintaining the network, keeping our customers safe and supporting the movement of essential supplies and services. Work is also due to start on the M56 J6-8 smart motorway in September, which will help reduce congestion and increase capacity.
While there are several projects planned along this 28 mile stretch of the M56, we’re working together to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.
The following projects are part of the M56 maintenance programme:
From: March 2020 To: November 2020
We’re pleased to confirm our work on the M56 at Helsby Viaduct is now complete. We managed to complete the following improvements four months ahead of schedule:
- Installed new drainage systems
- waterproofed the bridge deck and replacing bridge joints
- installed new safety barrier at the sides and within the central reservation
- resurfaced the carriageway and replacement of road markings
All narrow lanes have been removed and all lanes have reopened to traffic.
Concrete repairs will continue underneath the viaduct; however this will cause no disruption to the road user.
From: 10 August 2020 To: 31 August 2020
Work to replace the road markings on the M56 between junctions 9 and 10 is shortly due to start. This will take place on both sides of the carriageway and will include the replacement of road studs. Our aim is to ensure we keep the network safe and operational, as well as improving journeys for our customers.
Work is due to start on or shortly after 10 August 2020 for approximately three weeks. This will take place Monday to Friday, between the hours of 9pm and 5am.
For safety purposes, overnight lane closures are required on the M56 between junctions 9 and 10. Associated link road closures at junctions 9 and 10 are also required, and localised signed diversion routes will be in place.
From: 13 July 2020 To: End of August 2020
Following the completion of our survey work, we have a full understanding of what repairs are needed to the drainage system underneath the M56 between junctions 6 and 8. We’re now due to carry out work to repair the drainage within the central reservation. Our aim is to ensure we keep the network safe and operational, as well as improving journeys for our customers.
Advance work will start from 13 July 2020 for approximately one week. The main drainage repairs will follow for a further seven weeks. These works will take place Monday to Friday, between the hours of 9pm and 5am.
For safety purposes, temporary narrow lanes and a reduced speed limit of 50mph will be in place on both sides of the carriageway. In addition to this, overnight full closures are also required to safely install and remove the narrow lanes. The full closures will be in place from 9pm to 4am on the following dates:
- M56 between junctions 6 and 8 westbound - 21/22 August
- M56 between junctions 7 and 6 eastbound - 5 and 22/23 August
M56 junctions 6 to 8 smart motorway project
