We'll carry out essential maintenance work. We’ll resurface the carriageway between junction 27 and junction 26 and carry out essential bridge maintenance at junction 29.

Work will take place overnight between 8pm and 6am.

Diversion routes

Phase 1: A12 junction 27 to junction 26, westbound only, starting Monday 18 January to Friday 19 February (5 weeks)

Westbound traffic will be diverted via A12, junction 28 exit slip, turning around to head eastbound, taking the A1232 slip road towards Colchester, then joining the A1232 / Ipswich Road, A133 / Cowdray Avenue / Colne Bank Avenue / Cymbeline Way, then joining the A1124 / London Road and B1408 / London Road before re-joining the A12 at junction 25.

Phase 2: A120 northbound entry slip to the A12 junction 29 closure from Monday 18 January to Friday 12 February (4 weeks)

Northbound traffic will be diverted southbound towards the A12 at junction 28, turning around to continue northbound on A12.

We’ll carry out essential resurfacing work on the A120 at Whiteshill to Coggeshall and Marks Farm to Galleys roundabout. We’ll also renew faded road markings.

We plan to complete this work from Monday 18 January to Friday 29 January, working between 8pm and 6am, subject to weather conditions.

Diversion routes

Due to the extensive amount of work on this project, we've split it into two phases. We've closely liaised with the local authority to agree the most suitable diversion routes for each phase:

Phase 1: A120 Whites Hill to Coggeshall, in both directions, with weekend night closures on Saturday 23 to Sunday 24 January and Saturday 30 to Sunday 31 January (4 nights)
  • Westbound traffic will be diverted via the A12 at junction 25, following this towards the A12 at junction 19, then onto the A130 and A131 before re-joining the A120 at the A131 roundabout.
  • Eastbound traffic will travel the same diversion route but in reverse.
Phase 2: A120 Marks Farm to Galleys roundabout, westbound only, starting Monday 25 January to Friday 29 January (5 nights)
  • Westbound traffic will be diverted via the A12 at junction 25, following this towards the A12 at junction 19, then onto the A130 and A131 before re-joining the A120 at the A131 roundabout.

We’ll carry out essential work to the A14 junction 37 / A142 bridge. Work includes replacing the existing joints and bearings, installing a new drainage system and filter drains, replacing safety barriers on all approaches to the bridge, installing new bridge parapets and resurfacing.

The following closures will be in place:

A142, Fordham Road (above the A14 at junction 37) closures

The A142, Fordham Road will be closed in both directions on the following dates:

Weekend closures
  • Friday 8 January to Monday 11 January (8pm Fri – 6am Mon)
  • Friday 15 January to Monday 18 January (8pm Fri – 6am Mon)
Overnight closures
  • Monday 11 January to Thursday 14 January (8pm – 6am)
  • Tuesday 19 January to Sunday 24 January (8pm – 6am)
  • Saturday 30 January (8pm – 6am)

A14 overnight closures (between the entry and exit slip at junction 37)

The A14 will be closed in both directions on the following dates:

  • Friday 19 February to Sunday 21 February (8pm – 6am)

For the safety of road users and our work force, narrow lanes and speed restrictions will be in place on the A14 and A142 for the duration of this work. The right-hand turn lanes onto the A14 eastbound and westbound will be closed for traffic with a shorter diversion as shown below to avoid any traffic congestion.

Please note: Due to the complexity of this project, we've only included the closure dates for January and February on this update. We'll update the website once we have further dates confirmed for the remainder of the project.

Diversion routes

A142 southbound traffic wishing to cross the bridge will be diverted via A14 eastbound at junction 37 before joining the A11 towards Red Lodge Bypass, take the eastbound exit slip, turn right onto the B1085 to the roundabout and re-join the A11 southbound. Follow the A11 back to the A14 and continue to junction 37 to exit and re-join the A142 (Fordham Road).

A142 northbound traffic wanting to cross the bridge will be diverted westbound on the A14 to junction 35 to turn around and travel back on the A14 eastbound to exit at junction 37.

A142 northbound traffic wishing to use the A14 eastbound will be diverted to Landwane Road roundabout and come back on the A142 southbound, to take the A14 eastbound exit slip.

A142 southbound traffic wishing to use the A14 westbound will be diverted to Studlands Park Avenue roundabout and come back on the A142 northbound, to take the A14 westbound exit slip.

We’ll carry out essential bridge maintenance work at the above location. During this work, we’ll replace the bridge joints, improving the drainage system and resurfacing the bridge.
