Surveys taking place from May 2020

We will be undertaking important surveys and archaeological trial trenching from May 2020. You can expect to see survey vehicles and equipment in operation, but please note that this is not the start of any construction work.

The investigations will help us understand the significance of the archaeological resource and inform how we can avoid and/or minimise any harm through design and mitigation. The surveys are critical in ensuring we limit our impact on the historic environment by fully recording all archaeological sites appropriately. The results of assessments will be reported in our Environmental Statement and are a normal part of the development consent process.

A good, early understanding of the unique relationship between our scheme and the historic environment will help us to avoid any unexpected surprises and unnecessary delays once construction starts. This approach means we can develop a plan to allow mitigation works and development to coincide on site once the project is given the go-ahead.

Public consultation took place between September and October 2018. Thank you to everybody who took part and completed the feedback form. Where appropriate, we’ll use the feedback to make further refinements to the scheme design and development of mitigation measures.

We'll publish a consultation report when we make our application for planning consent (Development Consent Order). This will feature a summary of responses and will describe how our proposals have been informed by and influenced by them.

Overview

The A47 Wansford to Sutton is a 2.5km single carriageway section of the A47 road between the A1/A47 junction and an existing roundabout at Nene Way.

We’re upgrading this to a dual carriageway that we’ll build slightly to the north of the existing A47 for approximately 800m, before crossing the existing A47 to avoid a scheduled monument.

We’ll build a new free-flowing lane to the west that will connect the existing A1 southbound carriageway to the new A47 eastbound carriageway. Access will be provided to the local businesses and amenities in the area.

We’ll also construct an underbridge under the A47 where the proposed new road crosses a disused railway line to the west of Sutton Heath Road.

We’ll improve the junction at the current Nene Way roundabout, providing a connection to Sutton Heath Road.

The new A47 will then join into the existing dual carriageway at the Nene Way roundabout.

Having reviewed the feedback following the consultation from 13 March 2017 to 21 April 2017, and completed a number of other assessments, we proceeded with an amended version of Option 2 and consulted on this in September to October 2018.

Option 2 solves the main traffic and safety problems along the route. It has significant advantages in terms of environmental impact when compared to Option 3 and will have less impact during construction when compared to Option 1.

Key concerns raised in the 2017 consultation have influenced an amendment to the original proposal. The new dual carriageway will be moved as close as possible to the southern edge of the existing A47 at the eastern end of the scheme. This would:

  • increase the distance from the new road to both the River Nene and the village of Sutton
  • reduce the amount of land take required
  • allow for the easiest connection of existing side roads to the new A47
  • allow for most of the existing A47 to remain in place for local traffic
  • improve provision for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians

You can find more detailed information on the Preferred Route Announcement in the leaflet below. The consultation report can also be found in the Project media files and documents section below.

The 2017 consultation report can also be found in the Project media files and documents section below.

We are now working on a full detailed design review to take into consideration the the feedback from the consultation held in September and October 2018.

This project aims to:

  • improve road safety for all road users, including a safer route between local communities for cyclists, pedestrians, equestrians and other non-motorised users
  • contribute to sustainable economic growth by supporting opportunities for employment and residential developments
  • reduce congestion delays, making journey times more reliable and increasing the overall road capacity of the A47
