The A34 improvements project is exploring opportunities to reduce congestion and improve safety on the A34 between the M4 and M40.
National Highways is continually assessing a number of schemes across the UK to deliver a modern, integrated road network.
This includes the A34 improvements project – one of a number of projects within the portfolio for possible delivery in the third Road Investment Strategy (RIS3).
As part of the management of this portfolio by the Department for Transport and National Highways, we need to ensure that projects within the portfolio remain broadly aligned throughout their development.
A recent review has concluded that some schemes have reached a sufficiently developed stage, while others need further development.
The A34 improvements project has now reached a stage sufficient to merit consideration in due course. This means a public consultation will not take place this summer.
This scheme remains part of the portfolio and will be assessed in line with other projects as the RIS3 pipeline develops. Final decisions on the overall balance of the RIS3 Investment Plan will be published in 2024.
The A34 corridor forms part of the Solent to Midlands Route Strategy, which has been undertaken following extensive evidence gathering and stakeholder engagement. This work will highlight safety and congestion issues along the route, including where possible interventions can be considered further in the short term. Route Strategy Overview Reports will be issued later this year, along with National Highways’ Strategic Road Network Initial Report on the state of the network and suggested priorities.
